Privacy policy

This policy explains how WiEnergi ("we", "us") handles personal information collected through the WiEnergi mobile app and the WiMentors website (together, the "Service"). We process personal information in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
1. What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details — name, email address, password (hashed), and, if you use them, your Google or Apple sign-in identifiers.
- Profile — role (Job Seeker, Worker or Mentor), province, fields of interest or expertise, bio, profile photo and optional demographic details you choose to add.
- Documents — CVs, certificates and other files you upload to your Documents manager or attach to applications.
- Mentorship content — requests, chat messages, session RSVPs, ratings and reviews, discussion posts and replies.
- Applications — job, enterprise and mentor applications, including the information in the "Become a mentor" form on this site.
- Newsletter — your email address if you subscribe.
Information collected automatically
- Device type, operating system, app version and push-notification token.
- Usage analytics (screens viewed, features used) via Firebase Analytics.
- Crash and error reports.
- For video sessions: connection quality and join/leave times, processed by our video provider (Daily).
2. How we use it
- To run the Service — matching you with mentors, jobs, sessions and opportunities relevant to your fields.
- To let mentors and mentees communicate once a request is accepted.
- To publish mentor profiles in the public directory only for users who choose the Mentor role.
- To send notifications about requests, sessions, replies and application updates.
- To review mentor applications and keep the community safe.
- To improve the Service and fix problems.
- To comply with legal obligations.
3. What is public
If you register as a Mentor, your name, initials, areas of expertise, bio and profile photo are published in the WiConnect mentor directory and may be shown on this website. You can edit or remove these from your profile at any time; removing the Mentor role unpublishes your directory entry. Discussion posts are visible to signed-in users. Everything else — including chats, documents and applications — is private.
4. Sharing
We share personal information only with:
- Service providers who process data on our behalf: Google Firebase (authentication, database, storage, notifications, analytics), Daily (video sessions), Expo (app services) and our email provider.
- Employers and programme providers — only the information you include in an application you choose to submit.
- Mentors you connect with — your name, profile and the messages you send them.
- Authorities where required by law.
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it with advertisers.
5. Storage and security
Data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure. Some servers are located outside South Africa; where that is the case we rely on the provider's contractual and technical safeguards. Access to production data is restricted, and Firestore security rules ensure users can only read and write their own private data.
6. Retention
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, documents, chats, requests and directory entry are removed within 30 days. Aggregated analytics that cannot identify you may be retained. Mentor and job applications already sent to third parties are governed by those parties' policies.
7. Your rights
Under POPIA you may access, correct or delete your personal information, object to processing, and complain to the Information Regulator. You can manage most of this yourself in the app under Profile → Privacy & security, or by emailing privacy@wienergi.com. To delete your account, see Delete your account.
8. Children
The Service is intended for people aged 16 and older. If we learn we have collected information from a younger child without guardian consent, we will delete it.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes bump the version number and are announced in the app; the consent you gave stays recorded against the version you agreed to.
